Dress Code
- White or modest clothing required to enter some temples — white is the colour of mourning and purity
- Remove shoes at all temples and shrines
- Cover shoulders and knees at temples
- Conservative dress outside of beach/resort areas
Social Etiquette
- Head wobble (side-to-side) means yes or 'I understand' — similar to India
- Buddhism is central to Sri Lankan life — show great respect for monks, temples, and religious objects
- Never turn your back to a Buddha statue for a photo — face the statue and step backward
- Use the right hand for eating and giving
- Accept offered food and tea — refusing is impolite
Local Laws
Laws change. Verify current rules with your country's official travel advisory before departure.
- Drug offences carry severe penalties including life imprisonment
- LGBTQ+ activity is illegal (Sections 365 and 365A of the Penal Code)
- Pointing at Buddha statues or images with fingers (rather than the whole hand) is disrespectful and can cause serious offence
- Photography inside some temples is restricted — look for signs
- Alcohol is not sold on public holidays and Poya (full moon) days
