May–September is best — Vilnius's baroque Old Town (UNESCO, one of the largest and best-preserved in Central Europe), Trakai Island Castle (15th-century island fortress on a lake), the Curonian Spit (UNESCO — a narrow sand dune spit separating a lagoon from the Baltic Sea), and the Hill of Crosses (Kryžių kalnas — an extraordinary pilgrimage site with over 100,000 crosses) are at their best in warm weather.

Social Etiquette

  • Lithuania was the last pagan country in Europe to convert to Christianity (1387) — pagan traditions still run deep in folk culture, festivals, and the reverence for nature
  • The Hill of Crosses (Kryžių kalnas) began as a place of resistance to Soviet occupation — 100,000+ crosses have been placed there since the 19th century; the Soviet authorities bulldozed it three times; Lithuanians rebuilt it every time
  • The Curonian Spit is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Russia's Kaliningrad — a 98km narrow sand dune peninsula with the highest dunes in Europe
  • Lithuania was the first Soviet republic to declare independence (March 11, 1990) — the Sąjūdis independence movement is a source of fierce national pride

Local Laws

Laws change. Verify current rules with your country's official travel advisory before departure.

  • LGBTQ+ rights: same-sex activity legal; civil partnerships since 2024; social attitudes vary between Vilnius (more liberal) and rural areas
