Best Time to Visit

May–September is the best window — warm for Transylvania (Brasov, Bran Castle, Sighisoara), Sinaia, the Danube Delta (UNESCO biosphere reserve, pelicans, birding), and Bucovina's painted monasteries. The Transfagarasan Highway (open July–October) is one of the world's great drives. Bucharest's nightlife (December–March included) is legendary.

Dress Code

  • Casual throughout
  • Modest dress at Bucovina's orthodox monasteries — cover head and shoulders

Social Etiquette

  • Transylvania is a real region (not just a literary creation) — Germanic Saxons settled here in the 12th century and their fortified churches survive across the countryside
  • Bram Stoker based Dracula on Vlad the Impaler — a real 15th-century Wallachian prince whose castle (Bran Castle) is in Transylvania
  • The Danube Delta is the third-largest river delta in Europe and a UNESCO biosphere reserve — one of Europe's great birdwatching destinations
  • Romanian hospitality is extraordinary — being invited to someone's home means being fed far more than you can eat

Local Laws

Laws change. Verify current rules with your country's official travel advisory before departure.

  • LGBTQ+ rights: same-sex relationships are not criminalised; no marriage equality; social attitudes are conservative outside Bucharest
  • Driving: Blood-alcohol limit is 0.0% — zero tolerance for drink driving
