Dress Code

  • Remove shoes when entering homes, many traditional restaurants, and at temple/shrine entrances (look for signs)
  • Tattoos may restrict access to onsen (hot springs) and some gyms — check policy before visiting
  • Neat, conservative dress is appreciated in cities
  • Cover up when visiting temples and shrines

Social Etiquette

  • Bow when greeting — depth of bow reflects level of respect
  • Do not speak on the phone on trains and public transport
  • Do not eat or drink while walking (except at festivals)
  • Queuing is strictly observed — don't push or skip
  • Present and receive gifts, business cards, and items with both hands

Local Laws

  • Drug laws are extremely strict — even legal foreign prescriptions may require prior approval. Carry documentation
  • Photographing in temples and shrines may be restricted — look for signs
  • Jaywalking is technically illegal, though rarely enforced
  • Knives with blades over 6cm are illegal to carry in public
