Dress Code

  • Modest dress is important — Tonga is a deeply Christian country
  • Cover up when leaving the beach area — bikini/boardshorts are for swimming only
  • Sunday is the Sabbath: most businesses closed; do not swim at public beaches or play loud music
  • Ta'ovala (woven mat worn around the waist) is traditional dress for formal occasions

Social Etiquette

  • Sunday observance is serious — the constitution prohibits most commercial and recreational activities on Sunday; respect this
  • Tongans are warm, gentle, and proud of being the only Pacific nation never colonised
  • The royal family commands deep respect — never speak disrespectfully of the king
  • Kava (traditional drink made from pepper plant root) ceremonies are central — accept if offered

Local Laws

Laws change. Verify current rules with your country's official travel advisory before departure.

  • Sunday rest laws are enforced — commercial activities on Sunday are legally restricted
  • LGBTQ+ activity is illegal
  • Drug offences carry severe penalties
  • Cyclone: Tonga was devastated by the Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption and tsunami (January 2022) — the country has recovered significantly but some infrastructure damage remains
