Best Time to Visit

May–August is the best window — long days (near-24-hour light in June), puffin nesting season (April–August), and green landscapes at their most dramatic. Gásadalur waterfall, Sørvágsvatn lake-over-the-ocean optical illusion, and Vestmanna sea caves are summer highlights. Outside summer, spectacular but stormy and dark.

Dress Code

  • Waterproof jacket is not optional — it will rain
  • Layers for all outdoor activities — wind is fierce on cliff edges
  • Casual throughout; smart casual for Tórshavn's restaurants

Social Etiquette

  • Faroese people are reserved but incredibly warm once engaged — the islands receive very few tourists by choice
  • The Faroe Islands are a self-governing territory of Denmark — most Faroese are proud of their distinct language and identity
  • The grindadráp (pilot whale drive) is a centuries-old tradition — a deeply sensitive political topic internationally; engage with informed curiosity rather than judgement
  • Always stay on the marked paths near cliff edges — hundreds of metres above the sea with no barriers

Local Laws

Laws change. Verify current rules with your country's official travel advisory before departure.

  • Not part of the EU (despite being a Danish territory) — separate fishing and immigration rules apply from Denmark
  • Cannabis illegal
  • Cliff safety: several tourists have died after ignoring warning signs near cliff edges
