Dress Code

  • Casual throughout for tourist areas
  • Modest dress in Orthodox monasteries and churches
  • Beach resort wear at coastal areas

Social Etiquette

  • Cypriots are warm and hospitable — the Greek Cypriot south and Turkish Cypriot north have distinct cultures
  • The division (since 1974) is a deeply sensitive political topic — approach with care
  • Coffee culture is strong — Cypriot coffee (similar to Greek/Turkish coffee) is served in small cups with a glass of water
  • Hospitality is central — refusing food is considered rude; eat and enjoy

Local Laws

Laws change. Verify current rules with your country's official travel advisory before departure.

  • Crossing between the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus via the designated checkpoints is permitted
  • The Republic of Cyprus does not recognise Northern Cyprus — entering via a northern port can complicate official visits
  • LGBTQ+ rights: civil unions recognised in 2015, marriage equality legislated 2023
  • Nude sunbathing is permitted at designated beaches only
